‘Girls, Gore and The Grotesque’ (tying to my dissertation question ‘Girls, Gore and the Grotesque: How do depictions of monstrous women help with the reclamation of female identity and autonomy?’) explores correlations between depictions of womanhood and depictions of the monstrous. I am fascinated by the ways in horror that women become creatures, and the freedom that comes with it- stripped from the need to be perpetually beautiful, demure or nurturing, the monstrous feminine allows us to see women as hungry, powerful and free in ways struggled for in many other depictions of femininity in media, counteracting the ingrained patriarchal constraints and stereotypes that exist in modern society. My final piece depicts a monstrous woman as deity, bestowing her monstrosity- and freedom- on others, in a beautiful and bloody transformation.
